Introduction and issues to be explored
The Musée de la civilisation and its partners, the International Committee on Museum Security (ICMS), the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec and the Canadian Conservation Institute, welcome you to Québec City. Organized by the Musée de la civilisation, the 35th annual meeting of the International Committee on Museum Security will be devoted to “Museum Security. Problems, Trends and Solutions”.
One of the fundamental responsibilities of the International Committee on Museum Security is to promote organizational and technical efficacy through means of protection designed to meet the various danger that threaten museums and related institutions (theft, fire, terrorism, natural catastrophes and disappearance of objects from collections). Our goal at this meeting is threefold: to describe the present state of affairs, to identify trends and, together as specialists, to envisage possible solutions. The meeting will be an opportunity to discuss and analyze trends with the aim of arriving at conclusions that correspond to the nature of our specific needs.
The site of the meeting
With its historic fortifications, Québec City has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. The Old City overlooks the majestic St. Lawrence River. In 2008, the city celebrated the 400th anniversary of its founding.
This meeting will give participants an occasion to visit museums that are internationally renowned for their expertise and to become acquainted with the Musée de la civilisation du Québec, an organization that has been renewing nearly two thirds of its exhibition area every year for the past twenty years. Other institutions that participants will be able to visit include the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, the Musée de l'Amérique française and its Centre de la francophonie des Amériques, the Centre d’interprétation de Place-Royale, the Maison Chevalier, the Réserve muséale de la Capitale nationale (museum reserve) and the Assemblée nationale du Québec.
